What You Need to Know
The brown dog tick is unique among Illinois ticks because it can complete its entire life cycle indoors. While other ticks require outdoor environments to develop, the brown dog tick thrives in kennels, homes, and other indoor spaces where dogs are present. It feeds almost exclusively on dogs and rarely bites humans, but heavy infestations can result in ticks appearing on walls, furniture, and bedding.
The Illinois Department of Public Health notes that this tick does not survive Illinois winters outdoors and is not considered an important carrier of human disease. However, it can transmit diseases to dogs, including canine ehrlichiosis and babesiosis. If your dog has persistent tick problems despite topical preventive treatments, a brown dog tick infestation in your home may require professional interior treatment.
