What You Need to Know
Fruit flies are the tiny, red-eyed flies that appear seemingly out of nowhere the moment a banana starts to ripen. They’re attracted to fermenting sugars in ripening and overripe fruit, spilled juice, soda, wine, vinegar, and the organic buildup inside drains and garbage disposals. A female fruit fly can lay up to 500 eggs that hatch in as little as 24 hours, which is why a few flies can become a swarm within a week.
The good news is that fruit fly control is straightforward and rarely requires professional treatment. Remove or refrigerate ripening fruit, clean drains and garbage disposals thoroughly, rinse recycling containers (especially bottles and cans), empty and clean garbage bins, and wipe down surfaces where juice or alcohol has been spilled. Apple cider vinegar traps (a small dish of vinegar with a drop of dish soap) are effective at catching adults while you eliminate the breeding source.
If fruit flies persist despite good sanitation, the breeding source may be hidden — a spill under the refrigerator, a forgotten potato in the pantry, or organic buildup deep inside a drain line. For persistent problems that resist DIY efforts, contact Sanctuary Pest Control at 815-993-3472.
