More Than a Nuisance

House flies are so common that most people dismiss them as a minor annoyance. But the Illinois Department of Public Health classifies them as “filth flies” for good reason: their feeding and breeding habits make them efficient disease vectors. House flies breed in garbage, animal feces, and decaying organic matter. When they land on your kitchen counter, they regurgitate stomach contents to liquefy food before consuming it, and they defecate on surfaces where they rest. This behavior can spread bacteria including Salmonella, E. coli, and the organisms that cause food poisoning and dysentery.

House flies are strong fliers that can travel one to two miles from their breeding site. If you’re seeing persistent fly activity indoors, there’s likely a breeding source nearby — an uncovered trash container, pet waste in the yard, a compost pile too close to the house, or decaying organic material in a hidden area.

Control is primarily sanitation-based: sealed garbage containers, prompt removal of pet waste, clean outdoor grills and food prep areas, and well-fitted screens on doors and windows.
