What You Need to Know

Mud daubers are solitary wasps that look intimidating but are among the least aggressive stinging insects you’ll encounter. They build their distinctive mud tube nests on porches, under eaves, in garages, and on sheltered exterior walls. Each tube is a nursery chamber: the female captures spiders, paralyzes them with her sting, places them inside the mud cell, lays an egg, and seals it. The developing larva feeds on the stored spiders.

Mud daubers almost never sting people. They don’t defend their nests aggressively because they’re solitary — there’s no colony to protect. The primary concern is cosmetic: the mud nests can be unsightly on home exteriors. Old, abandoned nests can be scraped off and the area cleaned. If mud daubers are building repeatedly on your home, it likely indicates a healthy spider population providing food — addressing the underlying spider presence will reduce mud dauber activity.
