What You Need to Know
Western conifer seed bugs are a relatively recent arrival in northeastern Illinois, having expanded eastward from their native western range. They’re commonly mistaken for stink bugs or, more alarmingly, for “kissing bugs” (triatomine bugs that transmit Chagas disease in Central and South America). They are neither. Western conifer seed bugs are harmless herbivores that feed on conifer seeds and enter homes in fall purely for shelter.
The most reliable identifier is the leaf-shaped expansion on the hind legs — no other common home-invading insect in Illinois has this feature. They’re slow-moving and easy to capture or vacuum. Like other occasional invaders, they don’t breed indoors and don’t damage your home. Penn State Extension notes that they may congregate on the outside of buildings in late summer and early fall, gaining access through small cracks and gaps. Sealing your home’s exterior is the best prevention. Contact Sanctuary Pest Control at 815-993-3472 if fall invaders are a recurring concern.
