What You Need to Know

Yellow sac spiders are notable for being one of the more “bite-prone” spiders in Illinois. Unlike most spiders that bite only when trapped against skin, yellow sac spiders have been documented biting people without clear provocation — including crawling across exposed skin and biting seemingly without reason. Their bite is painful due to relatively large fangs, and the area may develop redness, swelling, and a burning sensation. Severe reactions are rare, but the bite is unpleasant.

These spiders are nocturnal hunters that don’t build webs to catch prey. Instead, they construct small, flat silk sacs in corners — where walls meet ceilings, behind picture frames, inside folded curtains, and in similar sheltered spots — which they use as daytime retreats. At night, they leave the sac to hunt prey on walls and ceilings. They’re commonly found on ceilings in the evening, which is when most encounters with humans occur.

The Illinois Department of Public Health notes that sac spiders are among the species prone to entering structures in fall. Sealing cracks around foundations, windows, doors, and utility penetrations helps prevent entry. If you’re regularly finding pale yellow spiders on your ceilings at night, contact Sanctuary Pest Control at 815-993-3472 for identification and treatment.
