What You Need to Know
Little black ants are frequently overlooked because of their size — at 1/16 of an inch, they’re easy to miss until they’re trailing across your counter in large numbers. They nest outdoors in soil, under rocks, rotting logs, and in cracks of pavement, but forage indoors for sweets, grease, and other foods. Their colonies are moderate in size, typically containing a few thousand workers.
They’re often confused with pavement ants and odorous house ants. The easiest distinction: little black ants are noticeably smaller than pavement ants, and they lack the rotten coconut odor of odorous house ants. If you’re seeing very tiny, shiny black ants in a steady trail, particularly during warmer months, little black ants are a likely identification.
Over-the-counter sprays kill the visible foragers but leave the outdoor colony intact. Professional treatment uses non-repellent spray along the foraging trails — workers pick up the active ingredient and carry it back to the colony, where it spreads through grooming — or bait products where they’re a good fit for the situation.
